Hi All, I recently attended the Seagriculture USA conference in Alaska. A link to the conference and speakers is <a href="https://seagriculture-usa.com/">here</a>. I participated as a speaker on seaweed markets in the U.S. and met with many industry peers. My organization, Seagreen Insights, produced a report on key takeaways which you can find on here on our <a href="https://www.seagreeninsights.org/publications">website</a>.&nbsp;

In summary, the U.S. industry has many opportunities and challenges, specifically with the fact that we primarily grow kelp which is somewhat limited in applications at the commercial level. For now most of the product from Alaska (and Maine) goes into food production but the consumer market for food products is limited. The industry is trying to scale to a level where kelp can be a more price competitive and higher volume raw material for other applications. But there are also many start-ups using seaweed biomass from other regions, including temperate species from Asia/East Africa.

Hi all, I'm excited to share this new report on cascading biorefineries I wrote with my colleague Rod Fujita. We describe how such biorefineries can squeeze more value and climate mitigation out of seaweed — while minimizing waste and GHG emissions and generating ecosystem services. &nbsp;We also attempt to move this concept from the conceptual to the practical by the current status of biorefineries, and with examples of how such biorefineries could be set up in real contexts at the end of the full report.&nbsp;Mobile biorefineries are still in development but may make it possible for seaweed farming communities, many of which are impoverished and marginalized, to capture more of the value of their crop. Biorefineries can be set up to make a variety of products. Of the 13 product categories we analyzed, we conclude we that biostimulants made from seaweed currently have the highest climate mitigation potential and highest technoeconomic feasibility because seaweed biostimulants are already available commercially, much of the seaweed is wasted using current production methods, strong demand exists for seaweed biostimulants, crop yield improvement has been empirically demonstrated, and reduced use of fertilizer in response to higher crop yield would be expected to reduce GHG emissions from fertilizer production and use (e.g., nitrous oxide emissions) contingent on substitution rates.&nbsp;&nbsp;
