** Community Feature : Meet Our Member, Maria Gigih Setiarti
------------------------------------------------------------

We are delighted to feature Maria Gigih Setiarti, a community educator, social entrepreneur, and seaweed processing expert with over 30 years of experience. Since 1994, Maria has empowered coastal communities in Indonesia and internationally through training, sustainable seaweed practices, and economic empowerment. Her work has reached regions like Fiji, Timor-Leste, Tanzania, and the Solomon Islands, where she has helped transform seaweed into a vital resource for livelihoods.

Maria founded Margi Algarium Indonesia Foundation, a hub for seaweed education and innovation. She also leads SAMBUNG ASA, which focuses on seaweed trading and farming development, and heads P2MKP Winner Perkasa Indonesia Unggul, which produces and markets seaweed-based products while offering certified training for entrepreneurs.

Maria’s entrepreneurial achievements are matched by her influence in national policy. She is a key member of the drafting team for Indonesia’s National Working Competency Standards for Seaweed Processing (2024–2029) and collaborates with global organizations like WWF and INFOFISH to deliver training on value-added seaweed products. Her efforts have earned recognition, including an award from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries for promoting the consumption of local fisheries products.

Maria is also actively involved in speaking engagements and articles, delivering insights on topics such as "Seaweed Farming Development" and "Bio-Industry Algae Phenomenon in Indonesia”. Her expertise, shared through workshops, public lectures, and articles, continues to inspire and educate the next generation of seaweed entrepreneurs and innovators. Her dedication to advancing seaweed’s potential as an economic and environmental resource is an inspiration to us all.

** Community Feature : Meet Our Member, Dr Zannie langford
------------------------------------------------------------

We are delighted to feature Dr Zannie Langford. Zannie has been researching the seaweed industry in Indonesia since 2020 and leads a team of researchers examining the socioeconomic aspects of seaweed value chains. She is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland, where she lectures in agribusiness, supervises PhD students, and manages agricultural research projects.

Zannie has a multidisciplinary background, beginning her career as a chemical engineer working on biodegradable plastics projects before transitioning to focus on economics and social science. She has managed a range of applied and academic research projects examining rural livelihoods and agricultural development, most recently leading a KONEKSI (https://koneksi-kpp.id/en/about-koneksi/) -funded project developing applications for using satellite imagery to help seaweed farmers manage seasonal and long-term environmental changes.

Her interests in the seaweed industry center on how farmers engage with value chains, the economic and social factors that shape production, and ways to support sustainable rural livelihoods.

Her second book, Globalisation and Livelihood Transformations in the Indonesian Seaweed Industry, explores this topic in detail by tracing the seaweed industry from the village level to national production and international trade. The book, which brings together contributions from a team of researchers who have worked together since 2020, is available for free download at https://doi.org/10.4324/9781003183860.

Zannie’s work continues to drive meaningful change in the seaweed industry, helping farmers navigate environmental challenges and improve their livelihoods. Her contributions, from groundbreaking research to practical applications, are shaping the future of sustainable seaweed farming. We are delighted to feature Steven Hermans, a seaweed industry analyst and the founder of Phyconomy, a platform dedicated to advancing information flow in the seaweed sector. Since 2020, Steven has visited over a dozen countries, gaining in-depth knowledge of seaweed harvesting, cultivation, and processing.

Phyconomy aims to bridge gaps in the seaweed value chain by offering insights and data that connect academia, business, investors, and government. Steven’s initiatives include a comprehensive seaweed database and the annual "State of the Seaweed Industry" report, which has earned notable recognition.

With a background in Communication and Media Studies from KU Leuven and prior experience as the founder of Caravanistan, a travel guide for Central Asia, Steven brings a unique perspective to his work. His insights have been featured in major publications such as the Financial Times, Washington Post, Semafor, The Ken, Yourstory, and The Fish Site.

Steven’s commitment to the seaweed industry is evident through his consulting work, conference presentations, and ongoing efforts to promote innovation and sustainability. Phyconomy continues to be a vital resource for the seaweed community.

His roles include serving as the National Value Chain Seaweed Expert for the UNIDO GQSP Project and contributing to the Partnership for Australia-Indonesia Research (PAIR) project, focusing on sustainable development and local empowerment.

Boedi's dedication goes beyond technical support; he enhances market access and profits for cooperatives and local producers through quality assurance systems and market training programs. His efforts have significantly improved the livelihoods of seaweed farming communities in Indonesia.
